    Would you like to experience the art of Nerikiri, a traditional Japanese confectionery? It's a delicacy unique to Japan, reflecting the seasons and often served during tea ceremonies. We are extremely excited to invite Toshiko Sugii Steffes, the certified master of Wagashi - traditional Japanese sweets from Ohio.Join us for a workshop where you'll color and shape Nerikiri focusing on autumn designs with Toshiko Sugii Steffes. Nerikiri is known for its soft, smooth texture, perfect for pairing with matcha, Japanese tea, or sake.     WABUNKA series- 書道Shodo Japanese Brush Calligraphy

    In this immersive workshop, guided by local instructor Tomoko Hetherington, you'll learn to write your favorite words or poems in 漢字(Kanji) and ひらがな(Hiragana) using traditional sumi ink and a brush. The process is as calming and centering as meditation itself.This workshop welcomes participants of all levels, whether you're a native Japanese speaker or entirely new to calligraphy. Tomoko will introduce you to the tools, guiding you through brush techniques and line movements. For those familiar with the art, she will suggest themes or subjects.     Kimono and Obi center piece craft workshop

    Join us for a Japanese artistic expression experience using the Kimono Obi! Learn from the Master of Kimono, Kyoko Nakama from Kyoto, Japan who is visiting Austin for the first time.Join us and learn about Kimono including the ‘Obi’ (Kimono sash) and how you can make your own beautiful ‘Obi’ decoration craft! You will be able to select your own Obi, make and take home your final Obi decoration, which also can be used for other purposes such as a beautiful table runner! We really want to make this a super fun experience so tea and Japanese snacks will also be served for those interested!About the instructor, Kyoko NakamaBorn and raised in Japan. After graduating from college, Kyoko received kimono dressingcertifications while working at a major corporate, and started her own kimono lesson studio in 1999. In addition to teaching kimono dressing at her studio and Kyoto Kimono Gakuin Kyoto Honko, she has studied Emondo which is the way to dress historical costumes including jūnihitoe and received certification on jūnihitoe dressing. In 2017, Kyoko was promoted to VicePresident of Kyoto Kimono Gakuin Kyoto Honko. She has also studied hair styling andmake-up, and received a cosmetologist license in 2021. She has many experiences in kimono dressing, hair styling, and make-up for coming-of-age ceremonies, wedding, and jūnihitoe experience, as well as in many kimono shows throughout Japan.

    Sake cup decorating class

    Learn how to decorate & glaze ceramic sake cups with artist Tina Williams of @BraveCeramics! This 1.5 hour event is a beginner level pottery class for people who enjoy getting creative & drinking sake.Tina will teach about the wheel thrown sake cup making process, how to add silk screened designs onto ceramics and the glazing process. Participants will design the outside surface of their cups to personalize their pottery.
