    NDUDUZO MAKHATHINI TRIO | SUN OCT 27 | 6:00PM & 8:30PM

Nduduzo Makhathini grew up in the lush and rugged hillscapes of umGungundlovu in South Africa, a peri-urban landscape in which music and ritual practices were symbiotically linked. The area is significant historically as the site of the Zulu king Dingane kingdom between 1828 and 1840. It is important to note that the Zulu, in fact the African warrior code, is deeply reliant on music for motivation and healing. This deeply embedded symbiosis is key to understanding Makhathini’s vision.Since making his international debut for Blue Note in 2020 with Modes of Communication: Letters From the Underworlds, the South African pianist and composer Nduduzo Makhathini has earned widespread acclaim for the genuinely spiritual transcendence of his music. For Makhathini, a Zulu healer and educator who has delved deeply into the histories and traditions of his ancestors, improvised music has never been merely about aesthetics or idioms. As the New York Times put it when naming Modes of Communication one of the Best Jazz Albums of 2020: “In a moment when spiritual jazz has become a dangerously buzzy concept, trust a musician who has truly devoted his life to divination practices.”Makhathini travels beyond any existing notion of music-making to offer his most profound vision of creative mysticism yet.

SY SMITH | FRI, SAT & SUN NOV 22-24 | SHOWTIMES VARY

Sy Smith has proven throughout her career that an R&B artist can be progressive while remaining firmly rooted in tradition. Foremost a singer with a vocal range spanning five octaves, Smith began an unending succession of background gigs with Whitney Houston in the late '90s, and has since worked closely with Grammy-winning trumpeter Chris Botti and Grammy-nominated group the Foreign Exchange, among dozens of other artists. After a brief period signed to a major, Smith established an independent label of her own, an outlet for compositionally solid and sonically adventurous albums including The Syberspace Social (2005), Conflict (2008), Fast and Curious (2012), and the entirely self-produced Sometimes a Rose Will Grow in Concrete (2018). She's consequently known for being a leading force in post-millennial indie soul.” - Andy KellmanSy raises her own bar and then leaps over it with her latest offering “Until We Meet Again” - her critically-acclaimed album produced by Zo! & Tall Black Guy, executive produced by Phonte Coleman and released on +FE Music in January 2024. This mellifluously soulful LP is drawing comparisons to Minnie Riperton and Deniece Williams and is already being called “the album of the year” by a few critics. Music journalist Mark Chappelle says “Smith evokes multiple traditions at once. With the sincerity of Diana Ross dedicating “Missing You” to Marvin Gaye, Smith lets her voice levitate until it breaks—as if just the right frequency could resurrect a loved one. Please note show times:Friday & Saturday 7:00PM & 9:30PMSunday 6:00PM & 8:30PMAll tickets $39.

    MICHAEL MAYO | FRI & SAT OCT 18 & 19 | 7PM & 9:30PM

Like Bobby McFerrin, one of his major influences (who was a graduate of the same L.A. performing arts high school), Mayo approaches his voice as a musical instrument, but in often unexpected ways — with Brian Wilson-style pop harmonies (“Robot Man”), Stevie Wonder R&B (“Another Love”), drum and bass (“What’s My Name,” inspired by a line from poet e.e. cummings’ “Crepuscule”) and even hip-hop (“About Your Love”). Even with his classical training, Mayo’s music is a seamless blend of alternative and neo-soul elements, a unique combination that defies genre. Juxtaposing wordless chants with incisive lyrics, Mayo underlines how music itself can provide emotions that transcend literal meaning. "...a flexibility of vocal expression so evolved that it seems to border on liquidity; Mayo wields a human voice in ingenious and surprising ways." - Nate Chinen, WBGOMichael Mayo, BONES - JAZZIZ 10 Albums You Need to Know: June 2021

Jeff Bradshaw Soulful Jazzy Christmas | Thurs-Sun | Dec 19-22 | Showtimes Vary

Jeff Bradshaw’s story began at a dusty floored church in North Philly, where brass bands are the main attraction. He was born and raised in church and that is where he had his first musical experience. The first instrument he began playing was the snare drum. Following that Mr. Bradshaw began playing the baritone horn and sousaphone. He recalls one very powerful day in high school when everyone was asked to stand in front of the instrument they would like to play. Of course, there was a crowd surrounding the drums, guitars, saxophones, trumpets, percussion, and woodwinds, but not one person was standing near the stack of trombones in the corner. Mr. Bradshaw believes that was the day the trombone was to begin its trek to becoming the coolest instrument in mainstream music, not just jazz.
