Rue Cler is named after the famous market street where the parents of founder John Vandergrift lived in the Seventh Arrondissement of Paris. Executive Chef Todd Whitney’s food is inspired by French tradition and seasonal, local products. Chef Whitney attended the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Oregon. He spent the early years of his career honing his skills in San Diego, Portland, Atlanta, and Boone. Upon returning to the Triangle, he worked for Jean Paul Fontaine at Bistro 607 in Raleigh before accepting his first executive chef position at J. Betski’s in 2006. He then moved to Vin Rouge in 2011 and excelled in French cuisine as executive chef. After opening and running Oval Park Grille in 2014, he began his current position at Rue Cler in April 2017, ready to dive back into his love of French food and wine and confident in the high potential of what could be accomplished at one of Durham’s oldest restaurants. Chef Whitney wows guests with his wealth of knowledge, skillful execution, and warm personality.
